Test Automation Frameworks vs. Tools: What’s the Difference?

This trips people up constantly, so let me be direct about it.

A test automation framework is the architecture — the set of rules, libraries, and patterns that define how your tests are structured. Think Selenium WebDriver, Appium, or Cucumber.

A test automation tool is the product or platform built on top of (or alongside) a framework. Think Katalon (built on Selenium + Appium), Mabl (its own engine), or BrowserStack (cloud execution layer).

In practice, people use the terms interchangeably, and that’s fine. When someone Googles “best test automation frameworks,” they usually mean both. This page covers both the raw frameworks and the tools built on top of them.
