Expected behaviour

Code Snippets do not work for Python. This has worked for me before.

Actual behaviour

For example, if I type the def keyword, code normally snows a popup to insert a snippet which contains a basic definition of a Python function. The snippet for the function no longer works. The def keyword is entered and the snippet is not created.

Steps to reproduce:

[NOTE: Self-contained, minimal reproducing code samples are extremely helpful and will expedite addressing your issue]

Here is an example with the for keyword. Normally, I would see a popup for several types of for statements. This is no longer working.

Logs

Output for Python in the Output panel (View→Output, change the drop-down the upper-right of the Output panel to Python)

No text output is displayed.

I would add for a similar settings that Ctr-Shift-P → Insert Snippet doesn't show any options.

Thanks Hssan Driss (@hssandriss) . I've also seen that Insert Snippet does not work either.

Well It seems that this an intended behavior in the latest release of the extension. You can see that in the change log of version 2021.01.0.

I hope this is temporary because I honestly don't get such decision to omit such important functionality?!
Michael Madden (@mikemadden42) or anyone, Any idea on how to downgrade to the previous version?

Great find Hssan Driss (@hssandriss) !

I'm not sure on the rationale for removing the snippets. I find this feature very useful.

I did find an alternative collection of snippets for Python & vscode. Until this issue is resolved, I'm using these new snippets with code.

Here's the github link:

Linking those directly: #14781, #15006

These snippets predate any sort of analysis being added to the extension and don't have any contextual information about the surrounding code, so don't end up playing nice with LS and VS Code (e.g. offering up a completion for a for an if statement in the middle of an import, or something).

I think we had suggested using user-defined snippets or a dedicated snippet extension in other issues; IMO these snippets cause more confusion on the whole than the benefits these days, but that's just my opinion as someone who has to handle issues coming from the other side of things.

Any idea on how to downgrade to the previous version?

You can install any previous version like this:

Aren't snippets supposed to be exactly what the name describes? Just snippets of code to reduce manual typing / copy-pasting from somewhere / avoid looking up exact syntax.

FWIW, I think they were incredibly useful just as they were and we've lost something by disabling the built-in ones completely.

I strongly believe the built-in snippets are still extremely useful especially for common usage (creating loops, classes etc). And for people who just started python losing the feature means making leaning a bit more difficult.
